The Amazing Thing Curtains Will Do for Even the Smallest Rooms of Your Home

Have you already discovered the power of drapery to transform a room? Amazingly, drapery (or curtains) will make almost any ceiling feel higher, make your windows appear wider, give your room a more elegant feel, and possibly even increase the perceived value of the home. Today I'm sharing 3 secret tips to help you hang drapery the correct way in order to enhance any space in your home.

Tip #1: Rod Placement Should Be Purposeful

My first designer tip is to hang drapes higher than you think you should. Most people choose to hang them just 2-4 inches above the window frame. Wrong plan! You should usually go as high as you possibly can. If your ceilings are higher than 10 feet, it might not make sense, but generally hanging them at least 8 -15 inches above the window produces an amazing look. Check out the photo above where they have hung them probably two feet higher than the window. Remember to consider the size of the curtain rod finials. Don't get too close to your crown molding or ceiling because the ends of the curtain rod (finials) may not fit. Plan carefully here.

Tip #2: Bracket Location Should Be a Big Deal

The second designer tip is to hang drapery to cover your walls, not your windows. You heard right! Push your rod brackets to the left and right of your window 6-10 inches depending on how much space you have. That way, when you open up the drapes to let the light pour in, you'll expose the entire window. The bonus here is it will give the illusion that the window is much wider than it actually is.

Tip #3: Drapery Length Should Be Deliberate

Designer tip number three is the length of the drapery should be hung as long as possible - usually to the floor. Some people like the pooling look (seen above), but I prefer a hem that barely "kisses" the floor. This way your drapery panels will hang neatly, and they will stay cleaner. Take this from someone who has a huge dog - hair tends to go everywhere. Never let your drapes look too short - like a flood is about to happen. Buy your drapes longer than you need if you are buying off-the-shelf, and hem them to the correct length. An online company that I love if you have a smaller budget is Half Price Drapes. You can choose the custom option if needed, get them at almost any length, and they are not as expensive as truly custom drapery. This is a smart DIY option for a fraction of the price.

I dare you to try these drapery tips in one of your rooms. Trust me, you will be amazed! Doing so will help you create a space that looks more expensive, elegant, and spacious. Whether you are selling or decorating the room just for your pleasure, I know that you will love your new look.
