Say Bye-Bye to the Black and White Trend

Recently I visited a model home - which I love to do for inspiration, to get my creative juices flowing. It was a lovely neighborhood and it had a beautiful exterior with lots of great landscaping. So exciting! I opened the door, walked in, and to my dismay EVERYTHING in the house was black and white. EVERYTHING. Even the children’s bedrooms had absolutely no other color in them. So sad!

Designers Get it Right

Now, don’t get me wrong. The designer got it right - as far as contrast, scale, balance, and textures. He/She even knew how to balance enough wood in the house to give it warmth. The problem is an average person can’t quite do the same thing. You’ve seen them - terrible black and white houses popping up in every neighbood, with only about 10% looking right. Average homes painted stark white with big heavy black roofs and trim. Then add the black windows to make it even less inviting. Not exactly appealing - at least for not the next 20 years. Or, dark kitchens that feel more like dungeons than cheery places to cook breakfast.

Color Makes You Happy

See how this average kitchen above looks fresh and welcoming? We see green and blue injected here - not just black and white decorations. The countertop is a softer gray, and the faucet and cabinet hardware are not black either. Hooray!

Plan a Room You Love

This brings me to my point. I had a realtor friend ask me to help her create a warm and cozy place for her to work everyday. Because she used green in her business logo, I knew green was her color and would be perfect for her office. I chose these pieces for my mood board to give us an overall guide in the design direction. She (and I) cannot wait for this to become reality - except for the ocean view. Haha! I wish!

Let’s Bring Color Back

If you are ready to embrace the right neutrals and colors to suit your personality, I would love to get your project on my calendar - in person or virtually.

Until next time,
