How to Easily Identify Your Design Style & Showcase it in Your Home
Have you ever taken a style survey to determine the name of your own personal decorating style? It's not really important what the name of it is because interiors should be reflections of the people who live in them. It should reflect your personal taste, memories that you've made, and interests that are unique to you. There is no right or wrong answer, it's just a discovery process that can help you hone in on the style that you love.
Step 1: Find Visual Inspiration Without Overthinking
To find what really speaks to you, the first thing I would suggest is to start a Pinterest board, if you haven't already. Give it a name such as living room. Search different rooms, or even certain styles or colors on Pinterest.com and start pinning away. Don't think about what the style is called, but feel free to search traditional, modern, cottage, farmhouse, pink living rooms, black and white bathrooms, or anything else to start finding what you like.
Step 2: Determine the Common Thread Between Each Image
Next, go through your 10-50 images and find what common themes run throughout. For example, do all of the kitchens have white cabinets with pendant lights above an island, or perhaps every bedroom has a dark, moody color as an accent wall. Maybe you are drawn to spaces that have a lot of texture and plants. If you have no idea what they have in common, don't worry. We can go over this together!
Step 3: Begin a Concept Board Based on Theme & Style
The next step would be to narrow down the details that you love for each space. You may be seeing a common thread as to the color or style of furniture, or maybe just the overall feel of the space. Again, this is something a decorator or designer will do for you before you make any furnishing selections.
Every person needs some inspiration in this exploring process, but when the real designing gets underway, we will walk through everything together. Once the design is complete, you will wonder why you waited so long to turn your room into something that is totally you, one that you and your family will love for years. Get ready to relax and celebrate the final design.
