How to Know When to Save or Splurge when Decorating a Room

Splurge on the Pieces that Need to be Comfortable

We often are asked which items to save or splurge on. Unless you have lots and lots of extra cash, filling a room with all high-end, luxury items is usually not the smart way to go. In general, experts suggest that you splurge on the larger pieces that you want to last for years, and save on items that are simple to replace down the line. For example, anything that you sleep on or sit on regularly (or for longer periods of time) should be investment pieces. These would include sofas and sectionals, accent chairs used for watching TV or even reclining, beds or chaise lounges, and even office chairs.

Save Money on Small, Easier to Replace Pieces

More affordable items can blend well with when used with higher quality pieces to really complete the room without breaking the bank. Items such as lamps, throw pillows, mirrors or small accessories are a great starting point for saving. Unless your passion is collecting one-of-a-kind art pieces, this is another area where you can bring in more affordable pieces to complete your room. No matter which selections you decide are worth the investment in the short and long term, try to create a balance between the high/low pieces, keeping in mind your overall style goals.

A Recent Client that Needed Affordable Options Only

A recent client needed to furnish a living room where she would only be living in for about a year. We worked together virtually and created this beautiful living room that was customized to her style. While only affordable options from retail stores made sense, this style could be elevated if you were wanting more high-end designer pieces. Check out the Splurge Vs. Save products below.

My client is a savvy shopper! She used the products that I sourced for her and was able to even use some gift cards and reward points to purchase a few of the items. Great job, especially since this is a temporary home for her.
